Sandra Hunter is a weaver who makes scarves, homewares and wall art. Her inspiration mostly comes from the landscape and history in the North of Scotland. Designs usually begin with ideas which are detailed into sketchbooks by using drawings, photographs and found ‘treasures’. She uses traditional weave structures and techniques to create designs with a modern twist. The colours and patterns are inspired by the Scottish Highlands and Islands. She predominately works with wool, cotton or linen sourced from UK suppliers.

Sandra was introduced to weaving on simple cardboard looms whilst undertaking the City & Guilds Certificate/Diploma in Textiles and Machine Embroidery. In 2012 she enrolled on a weaving workshop with Sam Goates of ‘Woven in The Bone’. She then bought her first Ashford eight shaft table loom and joined the Grampian Guild of Weavers, Spinners & Dyers. She applied for a Craft Fellow role with Historic Scotland ‘Skills for the Future’ program at Knockando Woolmill, one of the very few remaining operational historic district mills in Scotland. Training commenced with learning to weave on the historic 1896 Dobcross loom and by the conclusion of her two years training, she was skilled in all the processes carried out within an industrial setting. She was then directly employed by Knockando Woolmill company, spending time between the Dobcross and weaving on more modern Dornier Rapier fast looms. Whilst at the mill Sandra decided to expand her knowledge by undertaking the Handweavers Diploma between 2015 and 2017. All of her own designs are hand woven on either her Toika Eeva 32 Shaft compu-dobby floor loom or her table loom.

Sandra Hunter has carried out taster demonstration events in Stirling castle, Stonehaven, Leith Hall and exhibited her work at Aberdeen Yarnfest with Grampian Guild of Weavers Spinners & Dyers. In 2021, she took part in North East Open Studios (NEOS) where she displayed her weaving and undertook commissions for scarves for various clients. Over the last few years Sandra has attended various workshops which have expanded her knowledge of designing, weaving techniques and her portfolio. Her plans for the future are to participate again in NEOS 2025 and showcase her weaving in local shops. Commissions are welcome and can be bespoke to the client.
